Indoor Soccer, January 2005 : Indoor Soccer, Jan 2005.

In the winter it's cold and rainy, so there is an Indoor Soccer league that plays in some ex-Coast Guard hangars in Magnuson Park in Seattle.

(The lighting was poor, so the image quality is not great in some of these images.)

Utah, February 2005 : Utah, Feb 2005.

Chantal's sister Marian was in Salt Lake City for a year's sabbatical, so we took advantage of that to spend the Winter school break there, to visit, sight-see, and do some skiing, at Alta and Park City. (The last especially attractive because the Northwest was having one of its worst snow years ever, and the Southwest one of its best!)

San Juan Islands, May 2005 : San Juan Islands, May 2005.

The San Juan Islands are Northwest of Seattle, just before hitting Vancouver Island. They are a popular Summer vacation destination from Seattle. We spent a weekend at Friday Harbor, the largest town in the Islands, though that's not saying much! We took the ferry from Anacortes, driving up by way of picking Benjamin up from camp in Indianola, island-hopping via a total of three ferries and at least three bridges.

We had medium luck with the weather: not very sunny, but better than forecast. In general the Islands have dryer weather than Seattle, being in the rain shadow of the mountains to the West (Olympics and Vancouver Island). We went kayaking and saw seals in the water, but unfortunately did not make it our whale-watching to see the Orcas.

We elected to walk on the final ferry from Anacortes, and not take the car. This was probably a mistake, since it meant it was harder to get around on the Island. (In the height of the summer, though, taking a car would mean a long wait.) We did a little biking, and took a taxi tour the last morning. The coast is very scenic, and the interior of San Juan Island is quite rural and also very pleasant. There are places from which one can sometimes see whales offshore from the land, but we were not so lucky.

Home, May 2005 : Around Home, May 2005.

Around our home in April and May.

A mix of sunny and rainy weather gave rise to a number of fine rainbows. Double rainbows are actually much more common than one might think, but one does need to look for them. In the closeup, the sky between the two rainbows is slightly darker; this is known as Alexander's dark belt, and in some sense represents the missing light that has been diverted into the rainbows themselves. The primary rainbow is light that has been totally reflected within the raindrops, then refracted back out. The secondary rainbow has been reflected a couple more times within the raindrops, with more light leaking out, so it's fainter, and the colors are reversed from the primary rainbow.

Maman Birthday, May 2005 : Grandma José's birthday, May 2005

Over Memorial Day, we traveled down to California, to Aunt Caroline and Uncle Chip's house, for Grandma José's 70th birthday celebration.

(These pictures were taken with a Leica M6 with 35, 50, and 90mm Summicron lenses. The negatives were store-scanned, which are OK, but not great.)

A hike part-way up Mt. Rainier. We started at the White River campground, at 4,400 feet, and hiked up to Glacier Basin, 1,280 feet higher at 5,680 feet. It's about a 7 mile round trip, though we added at least a mile by also taking in the Emmons Moraine side-trail. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy day, so we never really saw the bulk of the mountain.

Winter, December 2005 : Winter, December 2005.

Winter activities, especially our usual visit to Grandma Dorothy and Grandpa Tor in Falls Church, VA.

The animal pictures were taken with my "zoo lens", the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L, handheld down to 1/90th sec, at ISO 800. Many pictures were cropped down a lot, making the equivalent focal length several hundred mm. This is the earlier non-stabilized lens, but it still does pretty well.
